An exciting fun-filled day for the family is being planned for Saturday, Nov. 14, as the Elba Chamber of Commerce along with the City of Elba will sponsor the second annual Foggy Bottom BBQ Bash and Arts and Crafts Festival.
The event will be held at Miller Memorial Stadium in downtown Elba, and gates will open at 10 a.m. Children under the age of 12 will be admitted free. Passes in and out will be allowed.
The Foggy Bottom BBQ Bash, sanctioned by the Florida BBQ Association (FBA), is a cook-off event that will feature professional and backyard barbecue contests. Cash prizes will be awarded.
“We are really excited to host this barbecue contest,” said Kaye Whitworth, executive director of the Elba Chamber of Commerce. “Our event has been proclaimed to be the 2009 FBA Alabama State Championship.”
The Foggy Bottom BBQ Bash also is a FBA Triple Crown Contest. In addition, it is a Jack Daniels Qualifier event.
“While the barbecue teams are preparing their best selections for the judges, we’ve also got lots of other activities planned throughout the day,” Whitworth said. “It truly will be a day for the entire family.”
The arts and crafts festival will be a great opportunity for everyone to get started with their Christmas shopping as a variety of vendors are expected, and Whitworth said there certainly should be no lack of food with more food vendors expected at this year’s event.
Several games and activities are being planned for the youngsters.
“We’ve got some exciting entertainment acts lined up for the day,” Whitworth said. “And, we’re planning to hold a vocal contest that should be very entertaining.”
The “Wiregrass Star” is a vocal contest that will be held during the Foggy Bottom BBQ Bash and Arts and Crafts Festival. Anyone can enter this contest. There is an entry fee, and first, second and third place winners will be awarded cash prizes.
A panel of qualified judges will grade participants on the following: quality of performance, originality of performance, “star” quality, stage presence and how well the material reflects the selected music style. The winner will be selected from performances held during the Foggy Bottom BBQ Bash event on Nov. 14, but according to Whitworth, there may be a need for a preliminary round prior to the Nov. 14th event depending upon the number of entries for the contest.
Two concerts are planned for the event.
Shane Owens, a country music artist, will perform at 11 a.m. The South Alabama band “The Springs” will perform at 3 p.m.
