Joe Albert Spurlin age 65 of Elba, Alabama died Monday, April 2, 2012 at his home. Funeral services will be held at Hayes Funeral Home Chapel Wednesday, April 4th, beginning at 2:00 PM with Rev. Mart Gray and Rev. Ken Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in the New Haven Cemetery with Hayes Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be at Hayes Funeral Home Tuesday evening April 3rd, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM. The family will be accepting flowers or those who wish to make memorial contributions are ask to do so to the American Cancer Society, c/o P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123.
Joe proudly served his country as a member of the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was a former employee of the Coffee County Sheriffs Department, he then worked with the Alabama Department of Corrections where retired as a Lieutenant after over 20 years of service.
Upon retirement he again returned to the Coffee County Sheriffs Departments where he continued to work until his health would not allow.
Survivors include his Wife- Jean Farris Spurlin of Elba, AL, Son- Byron Parrish, Elba, AL, Son- Shane Spurlin, Elba, AL, Daughter – Lana (Billy) Chandler, Birmingham, AL, Son-in-law and Daughter-in-law Dennis and Catina Manning, of Elba, AL. He is also survived by six grandchildren; Michael Spurlin, Courtney Parish, and Joseph Parrish all of Elba, AL, Cameron Spurlin of Wetumpka, AL, along with Grant and Riley Chandler of Birmingham, AL. Other survivors include his sisters Patsy Hines, and Gin Spurlin, and Mother-in-law Ollie Farris all of Elba, Alabama.
He was preceded in death by his parents Cody and Faye Spurlin, a son Bruce Parrish, and his father-in-law Eugene Farris.
Serving as pallbearers during his services will be: Jason Colvin, Michele Brown, Kyle Dubose, John Dubose, Jep Dubose, and Jerry Dubose.
