The Eastern diamondback rattlesnake is being considered for inclusion on the federal list of endangered species. That means it will be against the law to kill them. Hmmm, we appreciate nature and wildlife but . . . rattlesnakes - no. If that happens our personal thoughts will be, “maybe the game warden will not be around when we encounter one of them”. Hopefully the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service will accept reality and spend their efforts on saving sturgeons - or something else - and not take on the hopeless task of getting us country folks to embrace this viper we have been killing for all our life.
Now we have seen the proposed Alabama Senate and House redistricting plan proposed by the Republican controlled legislative committee. It is not any prettier than the one the Democrats proposed. But then we didn’t expect it to be better, there is just too much politics and self preservation involved. This one puts part of the Coffee County House district (Kinston area) in with Covington County and part (Pine Level to Curtis area) in with Crenshaw and Butler counties. The Senate district keeps Coffee and Covington counties intact but adds all of Pike and the northern part of Dale County. This will likely change some as the legislative session comes to an end, but at press time this was it.
The hottest news around Elba during the past week has been the late night happenings at Elba High School. Eight students have been charged by local police with causing the damage. Some are over 18 and some under, so they are only releasing the names of those “of age”. That has not stopped the Facebook addicts from writing about the whole bunch, and some not implicated. We are amazed at parents who want to be sure we don’t put their child’s name in the newspaper but will paste it all over the internet themselves. We tend to agree that this probably started out as only a “prank” but over $30,000 in damages goes far beyond harmless. These kids made a mistake, a big mistake and must pay for their youthful stumbling. Frankly, we doubt the courts will actually send them to jail, that is unless they already have a record, but no doubt there will be some punishment - and/or repayment for damages. Not to do so could send a message to the next group that they too can get away with rampart destruction.
Having written all the above, we hasten to add . . . gosh we are grateful none of our children were around to be a part of this mess. Of course all three of ours were little angels. That is our story, and we are sticking with it!
We continue to worry about the state of the nation and well . . . . the state of the world. The economy is crawling along in the U. S. and the deficit spending continues to gain speed like a downhill semi truck that has lost its brakes. The same is true all around the world. This can all be fixed but it frightens us at the reaction in France, Greece and yes the U. S. when efforts to cut the deficit trigger protest marches and mob riots over cost cutting measures that are taking away their “rights.” We continue to wonder where these people think the necessary money is to come from to continue their benefits!
It is hard to acknowledge (or stop), as this deficit spending helps the political types get re-elected, but it is a cruel, and real cause of inflation. The deficits make a dollar worth less and thus all imports cost more dollars and higher deficits. The cycle is endless but is happening here as well as in those European countries making the nightly news.
