Coach Andy Sanders uses one word to describe his Kinston 8U all star team that won the District 9 Division II Dixie Youth 8U District Tournament Monday night, June 17, in New Brockton. That word is…Determination. “First of all, we give all credit to God,” Sanders said following Monday night’s win. “We are here in this position tonight because of God, and we want to honor him. After that, it is determination. This is a group of very determined young boys.” Sanders said the team is comprised of boys that are determined to play the game of baseball the best they can, and he said they are determined put in the time it takes to be great ball players and teammates. Sanders said that type of determination is exactly what vaulted the Kinston 8U team to an undefeated District Tournament, which now has them preparing to play in July in the Dixie Youth Division II State Tournament. Kinston opened play in the district tournament on Thursday, July 13, with an 18-0 win over Zion Chapel. On Friday evening, July 14, Kinston met and defeated Slocomb by a final score of 22-4. A game on Saturday night, June 15, against Hartford seemed to be settled with a 12-7 Kinston win; however, a reported error by the umpires in calling the game one inning too soon required both teams to return to the field Monday night, June 17, to play that one final inning. After that inning to complete the game, the final score was Kinston 18 and Hartford 7. The defeat over Hartford placed Kinston in the championship game, which was played Monday night. Hartford had to meet Slocomb Monday night to determine which of those two teams would meet Kinston in the championship game, and Hartford was the winner of that contest. Kinston once again defeated Hartford in the championship game by a final score of 17-8 to win the district championship. As winner and runner-up at the district tourney, both Kinston and Hartford advance to the state tournament in Tuscaloosa. The state event begins Friday, July 12th. The Kinston 8U All Stars are Ryan Blair, Evan Hilburn, Parker Weeks, Rylen Hawthorne, Bentley Smith, William Smith, Woody Tew, Jacob Fitzpatrick, Easton Parker, Luke Carnley, Ben Kirkpatrick, Tucker Davis, and Jhett Creech. Coaches are Andy Sanders, Anthony Weeks, Justin Creech, and Brian Hawthorne. Through all the determination that Coach Sanders speaks of regarding his team, he said the best part for him as a coach and them as players is, “they have fun!” Kinston 8U parents now are selling raffle tickets on two 35-quart Yeti coolers as a fundraiser for state. The drawing on this raffle will be July 4th. See a parent to purchase a ticket.
